The Borno State government has confirmed the disbursement of N18.08billion to families displaced by the recent flood that devastated Maiduguri and its environs.

The flood relief distribution committee, during the presentation of its final report to Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House, Maiduguri, revealed details of the relief efforts.

The Chairman of the committee, Bukar Gujibawu, stated, “N18.08 billion was distributed in cash to displaced households alongside food and non-food items.

The disaster also resulted in the destruction of public infrastructure and farmlands and the loss of human lives.”

He added, “The committee received N28.2 billion through a basket fund supported by the Federal and State Governments, corporate organisations, and individuals. This includes a significant N10 billion contribution from the Borno State Government.”

Gujibawu further detailed allocations, including N987 million to 7,716 traders, N313 million to 814 worship centres, M213 million to 267 private schools, N89.4 million to 1,788 youths who contributed during the flood, and N12.5 million to 22 private clinics.

He recommended that N4.45 billion be used for rehabilitating earth roads in flood-hit areas, including Gongulong and Old Maiduguri roads, and for distributing remaining items to host communities.

Governor Zulum, responding to the report, directed the activation of a permanent disaster response structure and immediate reconstruction of damaged road networks.

Commending the committee, he stated, “Let me commend the members of this important committee for your meticulous work. In sha Allah, posterity will judge you positively.”
