The union is now calling on the governor to investigate the cause of the delay and why the payments have not been made as promised.

Over a year after Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State’s directive for the payment of the 7.5% pension refund to exempted staff members of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, the staff union has yet to receive the funds.

The union is now calling on the governor to investigate the cause of the delay and why the payments have not been made as promised.

In a formal appeal to the governor on Friday, the concerned staff union raised concerns about the hardship faced by affected staff members, many of whom rely on the refund for the welfare of their families.

"We are appealing to you to quickly intervene in resolving this very important and sensitive matter," the union stated, urging the governor to act swiftly to ensure that the legitimate contributions of staff members are returned to them.

The union noted that while the governor’s directive was issued more than a year ago, only a few workers from other sectors have received their refunds, while all exempted staff members at IBBU Lapai are still waiting.

"Several efforts were made through very important concerned ministries, including Heads of Service, but all have been in vain," the statement continued.

The union described Governor Bago as a sincere leader who believes in fairness and inclusiveness, urging him to intervene and ensure that the delayed refunds are released without further obstruction.

It also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to follow up on the matter and address the neglect of the 2022/2023 7.5% contribution repeal act.

While recognising the ongoing development in Niger State, both in human and capital resources, the union emphasised the importance of resolving the pension refund issue for the well-being of affected staff.
