Despite Spending N2billion On Renovating Governor's Residence, Cross River State Budgets Another N100million In 2025

A review of the 2025 proposed budget of the Cross River State government has shown that the sum of N100 million was budgeted by the state for the renovation of Governor's residence. Renovation of governor’s lodge is expected to gulp N100 million, this is despite spending N500 million on same in 2024.

A review of the 2025 proposed budget of the Cross River State government has shown that the sum of N100 million was budgeted by the state for the renovation of Governor's residence.

 

The development is despite the fact that a sum of N2 billion was spent on same renovation of Governor’s residence in 2024.

 

In 2025, another sum of N100 million was budgeted for furnishing of governor’s residence while the furnishing of governor’s lodge is expected to gulp another N100 million.

Cross River State has a history of high expenditures on governors’ lodges, residence.

 

In 2024, furnishing of governors’ lodge gulped N500.5 million.

 

The state spent another N5.5 billion to purchase SUVs, Prado Jeeps, Hyundai Elantra between January and September 2024.

Another sum of N9.6 billion was spent on buying Prado jeeps, Hyundai Elantra for ministries, departments and agencies. 

 

The prioritisation of renovations of government lodge, residence is despite the state having 1.9 million poor persons per details on the multidimensional poverty index of the National Bureau of Statistics.

 

It is also despite the fact that 36% of children are denied access to education, 82% of households in the state lack access to sanitary facilities, 81% of households in the state lack access to clean drinking water. 

 

There have been concerns on priority spendings by states especially amid stated poor economic resources in terms of revenue.

 

Many states heavily rely on loans to fund their budget while also relying on federally distributed revenue. 

 

As of June 2024, Cross River State owes N155.4 billion domestically, the state also owes another $210 million externally.

 

The reliance on loans usually lead to high debt servicing figures which are blamed also in part for poor developments in different states.
