The Take-It-Back Movement (TIB), a human rights advocacy organisation, has offered to help a young Nigerian who has been languishing in Lagos prison for two years awaiting trial.
The organisation made the offer on Monday after human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, encountered several of the detainees at a Lagos Magistrate Court.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate for African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 General Elections, decried how the Nigerian “criminal justice system” plunged poor Nigerians into prison for years while real criminals are living large and oppressing the poor more and more.
After his encounter with the detainees, Sowore said, “I encountered some awaiting trial detainees at a Lagos Magistrate court earlier today. One of them was so excited to connect that he practically fell over.
“So many of these guys are victims of the so-called criminal justice system that feeds the poor to the prison system while the real criminals are living large.
“We also met some detainees who have been languishing in prison for 2 years, just waiting for Lagos DPP advice."
Referring to one of the detainees, Sowore added, "Please, if you know him, @TIBmovement human rights committee wants to help.”
