Take-It-Back Movement Demands Immediate Reinstatement Of Nasarawa University Rusticated Students Over Creation Of WhatsApp Group
February 4, 2025

Reacting to the rustication in a statement issued on Tuesday, TIB described the expulsion as unjust and demanded the immediate reinstatement of the affected students.

The Take-It-Back Movement students wing has condemned the expulsion of 37 Nasarawa State University students, who were accused of organising a protest via a WhatsApp group against the university's introduction of a third semester.

SaharaReporters reported on Monday that the Senate of the University, in the rustication letter dated December 9, 2024, accused the affected students of “criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, and cyber-stalking” for their participation in a chat group intended to mobilise demonstrations against the university’s decision to introduce a third semester.

Reacting to the rustication in a statement issued on Tuesday, TIB described the expulsion as unjust and demanded the immediate reinstatement of the affected students.

TIB in the statement signed by Oguntola Sunday, criticised the university's actions as an infringement on the students' rights to free speech and assembly, emphasising the need for accountability and an end to systemic oppression in Nigeria's educational institutions.

“We, the Take-It-Back Movement Student Wing, unequivocally condemn the unjust expulsion of 37 students from the Nasarawa State University for forming a WhatsApp group to organise protests," the group avowed.

“This blatant violation of their right to free speech and assembly is yet another example of the systemic oppression that plagues our educational institutions.

“We stand in solidarity with the affected students and call for their immediate reinstatement."

The group urged the university management to respect students’ rights to express their opinions and engage in peaceful protests without fear of retribution, adding that it is their inalienable right

“As we continue to fight for a more just and equitable society, we must remain vigilant in holding our educational institutions accountable for their actions.

“The future of Nigeria depends on the ability of its youth to engage in critical thinking and peaceful activism, and we will not allow their voices to be silenced.”
