His suspension comes amid a growing wave of defections from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, the lawmaker representing Kano South Senatorial District, over alleged anti-party activities.
His suspension comes amid a growing wave of defections from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sumaila was suspended alongside three other prominent NNPP members —.Ali Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.
The decision was announced on Monday by Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, the party’s chairman in Kano State, during a press briefing in the state.
According to Dungurawa, the affected members, who were elected to the National Assembly on the NNPP platform, engaged in actions that contradict the party’s principles.
He accused them of betraying the NNPP despite receiving complimentary tickets during the elections.
One of the key incidents that triggered the suspension was the wedding ceremony of Sumaila’s daughter and the commissioning of projects at his university in Sumaila, which were attended by top APC figures, including National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau. NNPP members were conspicuously absent from the events.
The suspensions come just 24 hours after Ganduje hinted at an impending mass defection of NNPP members to the APC, further fuelling speculations that several opposition figures are realigning with the ruling party ahead of the next general elections.
The APC, under Ganduje’s leadership, has been aggressively courting opposition members in a bid to consolidate its hold on power before 2027.
To address the issue, the NNPP leadership has set up a committee to investigate the suspended members and determine their fate within the party.
Despite the action, Dungurawa noted that the NNPP remains open to reconciliation, stating that if the affected members acknowledge their actions and seek forgiveness, they may be reinstated.
The political landscape in Kano remains tense, as the NNPP, which took power in the state in 2023, faces internal strife amid growing external pressure from the APC.
With defections looming, the battle for Kano’s political future is far from settled.
