March 27, 2025

The proposed amendment is part of a broader constitutional review process, with 32 bills scaling the second reading during Thursday’s plenary session.

A bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to establish the office of the Prime Minister as the head of government and the President as the head of state on Thursday passed its second reading at the House of Representatives.

The proposed amendment is part of a broader constitutional review process, with 32 bills scaling the second reading during Thursday’s plenary session.

The bill, if passed into law, would restructure Nigeria’s executive leadership by separating the functions of governance and ceremonial representation.

Among the other notable constitutional amendment bills that progressed through the legislative process is a proposal to allocate specific seats for women in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.

The measure, according to the lawmakers, aims to enhance gender representation and inclusivity in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Another key amendment seeks to expedite the resolution of pre-election petition matters by reducing the time required for determination.

It also proposes the establishment of pre-election tribunals to handle related disputes and outlines regulations for the suspension of National Assembly members from legislative duties.

Additionally, the House considered a bill to amend the constitution to review the qualifications required for candidates seeking the offices of President, Vice President, Governor, and Deputy Governor of Nigeria.

Further constitutional alterations include a proposal to reassess the status of the Federal Capital Territory concerning the election of the President, alongside bills advocating for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State.

With the developments, the total number of constitutional amendment bills that have successfully passed the second reading in the House of Representatives has now reached 113.
