Musk disclosed that the bug, which affected the “For You” feed, X’s algorithmically curated timeline, caused users to miss out on a significant number of updates from people they follow.
Elon Musk, the American billionaire owner of X (formerly Twitter), has revealed that a major technical glitch in the platform’s algorithm prevented users from seeing posts from many of the accounts they followed.
In a post shared on Monday, Musk disclosed that the bug, which affected the “For You” feed, X’s algorithmically curated timeline, caused users to miss out on a significant number of updates from people they follow.
“We found a significant bug in the 𝕏 For You algorithm that resulted in users seeing far fewer posts from people that they follow. It should be fixed by tomorrow,” Musk wrote.
He added that the company is introducing a new customisation feature for the “Following” feed after receiving feedback from users. The update will allow people to choose between seeing all posts from the accounts they follow or only the most engaging ones.
“Also, based on a user suggestion, we are adding a setting for your Following feed to see either everything from everyone you follow or only the highlights. That should make the Following feed much more usable,” Musk said.
In July, Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, experienced a major service outage affecting users worldwide.
According to Starlink in an X post, the company is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it.
Starlink is owned by United States billionaire, Elon Musk.
"Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience, we'll share an update once this issue is resolved."
As of 3.54pm ET, Downdetector had recorded 36,705 incidents of users reporting problems with the service.
Elon Musk also addressed the disruption on X, writing: “Service will be restored shortly. Sorry for the outage. SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
