The visit marks one of Tinubu’s busiest diplomatic schedules this year, with his itinerary covering the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit and the 7th African Union–European Union Summit.
President Bola Tinubu is set for another round of international engagements as he departs Abuja on Wednesday for a two-nation trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, the Presidency announced on Tuesday.
The visit marks one of Tinubu’s busiest diplomatic schedules this year, with his itinerary covering the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit and the 7th African Union–European Union Summit.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said: “President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Wednesday for a two-nation visit to Johannesburg, South Africa and Luanda, Angola.
“President Tinubu’s first stop is Johannesburg, where he will attend the 20th summit of the G20 Leaders. After the summit, he will proceed to Angola for the AU-EU summit,” the statement added.
Tinubu’s attendance at the high-level meetings follows invitations from global leaders, including South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, current G20 President, and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who extended a similar invitation during his tenure in 2024.
Tinubu will be accompanied on the trip by several top government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake, Trade and Investment Minister Jumoke Oduwole, and National Intelligence Agency Director General, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
The G20 Summit, taking place from November 22 to 23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, will gather leaders of the world’s largest economies under the theme, “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.” The agenda spans critical topics such as disaster risk reduction, climate change, just energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work, and artificial intelligence.
According to the statement: “President Tinubu is also expected to hold bilateral meetings during the Summit in furtherance of the Renewed Hope Agenda, as well as to discuss regional and international peace, security, and development.”
Following the G20 Summit, Tinubu will fly to Luanda for the AU-EU meeting slated for November 24 to 25, bringing together African and European leaders to deliberate on shared policy concerns.
“The AU and EU meeting will bring together young leaders, innovators and Civil Society Organisations to brainstorm on some of the shared challenges of the two unions.
“It will also provide recommendations on how to address issues related to climate change, inclusivity in development, infrastructure, the digital economy, the creative industry, manufacturing, and agribusiness,” the statement said.
He is expected to return to Nigeria at the end of both meetings.
Tinubu is embarking on international trips as terrorists continue to hold 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State while several communities in Kwara, Kaduna and Zamfara are under bandits attacks.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that no fewer than 25 students were abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, early Monday morning, according to confirmation by the Kebbi State Police Command.
The attack, carried out by heavily armed bandits, left one staff member dead and another injured. This was disclosed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar Kotarkoshi.
The incident reportedly occurred when the assailants stormed the school and engaged police officers on duty in a fierce gun battle.
Despite the officers’ efforts, the attackers scaled the school’s perimeter fence and forcibly removed the students from their hostel.
The police spokesperson confirmed that one Hassan Makuku lost his life during the attack, while Ali Shehu sustained gunshot injuries to his right hand.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Bello Muhammad Sani, deployed additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups, to the area.
