Kano authorities have intercepted 4,920 bottles of beer transported into the state, after operatives of the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) impounded three trucks conveying alcoholic drinks during a night operation.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Managing Director of KAROTA, Faisal Mahmud, confirmed the seizure in a statement issued to journalists by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Ibrahim, on Thursday in Kano.
He said, “The trucks, loaded with 410 cartons and 4,920 bottles of beer, were intercepted by KAROTA operatives during a night patrol along major streets within the Kano metropolis.
“The consignments were being transported for delivery to different locations in the city.
“The interception was in line with KAROTA’s mandate to identify and report suspicious movements.”
Mahmud noted that KAROTA would maintain heightened surveillance to stop the circulation of intoxicants considered harmful to public health.
The seized trucks and goods were handed over to the Kano State Hisbah Board.
Receiving them, the Commander-General of the board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, commended KAROTA personnel for their vigilance and pledged that due process would precede the destruction of the items.
He was represented by the Head of the Intoxicants Unit, Chief Superintendent of Hisbah, Sani Nasidi.
Nasidi said Hisbah would continue partnering with KAROTA to curb the smuggling of prohibited goods into Kano State.
