Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has told the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the party’s challenges are surmountable, urging its current leadership to remain steadfast and confront indiscipline within its ranks.
Obasanjo gave the counsel on Saturday during a consultative visit by the PDP NWC, led by its National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, to his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In a statement the party shortly after the meeting, shared on X, Obasanjo was quoted to have stated that the PDP remains a critical pillar of Nigeria’s democracy and must reposition itself as a strong, disciplined opposition capable of putting the national interest above partisan considerations.
“Things are not beyond repair. Soldier on… you are doing very well,” the former president told the party leaders, commending the steps taken so far by the NWC to stabilise and reposition the party.
He stressed that discipline was non-negotiable for any political organisation seeking relevance, noting that party members must submit themselves to established rules and structures.
“Anybody who wants to belong to a political party must adhere strictly to its rules and regulations,” Obasanjo said.
The former president also emphasised the importance of a credible opposition in a democratic system, charging the PDP leadership to remain focused on national development rather than narrow political interests.
He warned that the prevailing political and economic challenges facing the country required all political actors to act responsibly and constructively.
Obasanjo further criticised the direction of the current federal administration, saying the manner in which the government is being run “cannot take Nigeria anywhere good,” and underscored the need for alternative leadership anchored on competence and discipline.
He assured the PDP leadership of his continued support, offering his experience and political insights to help guide the party through its current challenges.
He also affirmed his readiness to provide further counsel whenever called upon.
Responding, Turaki expressed appreciation to the former president for his encouragement and guidance, describing Obasanjo’s counsel as invaluable to the party’s rebuilding efforts.
The PDP delegation included the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara; former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang; former Niger State Governor, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu; the PDP governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Dr Oluwole Oluyede; as well as members of the National Working Committee and other party leaders from the South-West and across the country.
The visit ended on what party officials described as a note of renewed enthusiasm and commitment. The PDP NWC is expected to continue its consultations with other party leaders nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen unity, address internal disputes, and reposition the party as a formidable opposition.
