A Kenyan woman identified as Karen Lojore has reportedly died during Nigerian singer Asake’s concert in Nairobi on Saturday.
The incident occurred at Nyayo Stadium, where a stampede reportedly broke out at the show attended by thousands of fans.
According to Kenyan news platform, Ghetto Radio, the concert was marred by poor ticket planning, with congestion developing at entry points to the stadium.
Kenya’s Kodong Clan later announced its withdrawal from the event, citing disrespect and poor treatment by the organisers.
Friends and acquaintances of the deceased took to social media to mourn her death, noting that she had secured a ticket, which was expected to guarantee her safety at the venue.
“One of my friends just lost her friend at the Asake concert; she was in the stampede and unfortunately lost her life, yet she had a ticket. My heart breaks for her. Aki, may she rest in peace,” a social media user tweeted.
Poet and activist Willie Oeba also confirmed the incident in a separate post, lamenting the circumstances surrounding her death.
“Karen passed on last night as a result of the stampede at the Nyayo Stadium Asake concert. Very sad to die in such a manner at such a time. “Rest in peace, young soul,” he said.
Eyewitness accounts alleged that stewards at the entry points were slow in clearing revellers into the venue, leading to large crowds forming outside the stadium.
According to the accounts, police intervention to restore order escalated the situation, resulting in panic, running battles and shouts of “I can’t breathe” from within the crowd.
A similar tragedy occurred at Asake’s London concert on December 15, 2022, at the O2 Brixton Academy, where a crowd crush claimed two lives and left several others critically injured.
