In a statement released on Friday, the forum accused authorities of punishing Mojisola for “standing for professional ethics, patient safety, and truth.”
The Elegant Nurses Forum has condemned what it described as sustained threats to life, intimidation, and “gross human rights violations” against Nurse Rufus Mojisola, a whistleblower in Kwara State.
In a statement released on Friday, the forum accused authorities of punishing Mojisola for “standing for professional ethics, patient safety, and truth.”
The statement was signed by Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, representing the Elegant Nurses Forum.
The statement alleged that the nurse was illegally and dangerously transferred to a facility “plagued by terrorist activities,” a move described as putting her life at risk.
It added that Mojisola was later attacked by thugs, widely suspected to be sponsored by the local government, and was coerced into resigning after threats were reportedly issued to her father.
The forum called these actions “grave violations of her fundamental human rights and professional dignity.”
The group also criticized the Kwara State Chairman of NANNM, saying his inaction despite “credible suspicions and reports of threats” suggested “a troubling level of compromise within the state leadership.”
According to the Elegant Nurses Forum, “It is increasingly obvious that the Kwara State Government is indirectly involved in aiding and abetting criminal acts, fostering a climate of fear, intimidation, and oppression.”
The statement warned that such conduct “worsen(s) morbidity and mortality rates by undermining the safety, morale, and ethical independence of Nurses and Midwives who are critical to healthcare delivery.”
The forum demanded the immediate invalidation of Mojisola’s resignation, which it said was “obtained under duress and coercion,” as well as the full payment of all outstanding salaries, allowances, and arrears owed to her.
It further called for guaranteed and credible security for Nurses and Midwives in Kwara State, especially whistleblowers, and the immediate reversal of illegal, punitive, and unsafe postings for healthcare workers.
The statement also demanded an independent investigation into the attack, threats, and the alleged role of local and state actors, alongside intervention by the National Secretariat of NANNM, citing evidence of compromise at the state level.
The forum stressed the need for an end to all forms of intimidation, harassment, and victimization of nurses speaking out against wrongdoing, as well as a formal public assurance from the Kwara State government guaranteeing non-retaliation.
It also called for institutional reforms to protect whistleblowers in the health sector.
The forum warned that if these demands were not met within 72 hours, it would escalate the matter to national and international bodies, including the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the United Nations, the United States Embassy, and other human rights organizations.
The statement concluded: “We reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with Nurse Rufus Mojisola and all Nurses facing oppression for standing on the side of truth. An injury to one Nurse is an injury to all.
"We will continue to resist intimidation and demand justice, accountability, and safety for healthcare workers and the patients they serve.”
