Prosecutors allege that Yoon tried to block his arrest in January by barricading himself inside the presidential compound, ordering security measures aimed at preventing investigators from executing a warrant.

South Korea’s special prosecutor on Friday requested a 10-year prison sentence for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, accusing him of obstructing investigators who sought to arrest him following his failed attempt to impose martial law, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Prosecutors allege that Yoon tried to block his arrest in January by barricading himself inside the presidential compound, ordering security measures aimed at preventing investigators from executing a warrant.

The sentencing request marks the first time special prosecutors have sought a prison term against the ousted leader, who faces multiple charges linked to the controversial episode, Reuters quoted the news agency as reported.

Yoon was removed from office earlier this year amid mounting legal and political pressure stemming from the failed martial law bid, which sparked widespread criticism and protests.

He has denied wrongdoing, arguing that his actions were lawful and necessary at the time.

The court is expected to hear further arguments from both sides before issuing a ruling at a later date.
