A tragic helicopter crash in the southern New Jersey town of Hammonton on Sunday has left one person dead and another battling for life in hospital.

AP reports that the incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. local time when two helicopters reportedly collided midair, sending one spiraling to the ground before bursting into flames.

Dramatic footage from the scene showed one aircraft spinning uncontrollably before impact.

Confirming the development, Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel said emergency responders rushed to the scene following distress calls from residents.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze that engulfed one of the choppers.

According to the report, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was airlifted to a nearby trauma centre and is currently in critical condition.

Authorities have yet to identify the victims or disclose what may have caused the fatal collision.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will both opened investigations into the crash, Friel added.
