The Ogun and Lagos state governments have confirmed that British-Nigerian two-time heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident earlier today along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
According to a joint statement, the vehicle conveying a team of four collided with a stationary truck on the expressway, an incident that resulted in the deaths of two occupants.
Emergency responders evacuated Anthony Joshua and another passenger from the scene to a specialised medical facility in Lagos, while authorities managed the situation at the accident site.
Giving details of their medical condition, the state governments said, “Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time. A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely.”
The statement also provided an update on Joshua’s state after the accident, noting that “Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family.”
On official actions taken after the crash, the governments said that “Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have also commenced,” and added that “We appreciate the concern shown by members of the public and kindly request privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family at this time.”
SaharaReporters earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sympathy to Joshua following the tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives and left the boxer injured.
In a statement released on Monday, and shared on official X handle, the President had described the incident as a painful loss that has cast “a deep shadow on this season,” while extending condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with the injured sportsman and his loved ones.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” Tinubu said.
The President had acknowledged the emotional toll of the incident, noting that such moments call for unity and collective support. “I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” he stated.
