BREAKING: Nigerian Police Inspector’s ‘Accidental Discharge’ Kills Man At Calabar Drinking Spot

A 40-year-old man, identified as Sunday Ejimot, has been shot dead following an alleged accidental discharge from the service pistol of a police inspector in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred at about 1:40pm on Sunday, December 29, 2025, at a drinking spot along Asimita Road, Ikot Ansa area of the city.

A police situation report obtained by SaharaReporters revealed that the officer involved, Inspector Atimbang Ojogwu (AP/No. 198424), attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), was drinking with members of his Biase community when he pulled out his service pistol, a Tokarev model.

The report stated that the inspector allegedly forgot that the pistol had already been cocked and mistakenly pulled the trigger, firing a single round that struck Ejimot, who was seated with the group, in the neck.

“Having forgotten that he had already corked the pistol beforehand, he mistakenly pulled the trigger, and one Sunday Ejimot 'M', aged 40, who was sitting with them, was gunned down as the bullet hit his neck,” the situation report said.

“The victim was immediately rushed to Navy Reference Hospital Mine but was confirmed dead on arrival. However, the suspect has been disarmed and arrested. The corpse has been deposited at UCTH’s morgue for preservation and autopsy.”

Police authorities said the inspector has been disarmed and arrested, while the corpse of the deceased has been deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) morgue for preservation and autopsy.
