The agencies said the boat, identified as a Savvy Marine passenger vessel, was en route from Ilashe Beach House when the accident occurred.

Six passengers have been confirmed dead while four others were rescued after a marine passenger boat was involved in a fatal accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun Water Channel in Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at about 8:35 p.m., according to a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

The statement was jointly signed by LASWA’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Wuraola Alake, and NIWA Lagos Area Office’s Head of Corporate Affairs Unit, Omowunmi Yussuff.

The agencies said the boat, identified as a Savvy Marine passenger vessel, was en route from Ilashe Beach House when the accident occurred.

The statement read, “Upon receiving a distress alert, they immediately activated their search and rescue teams, which responded promptly and worked closely in collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders.

“As of the time of this report, four passengers have been successfully rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

“Sadly, six other passengers were found dead at the scene. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing to account for all persons involved.”

Preliminary findings by the waterways authorities suggest that the boat may have collided with a submerged object, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the mishap.

The agencies assured the public that a comprehensive investigation would be carried out and that further updates would be provided as more details emerge.

“LASWA and NIWA wish to assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available,” the statement said.

“LASWA and NIWA extend their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and assure the public of their continued commitment to ensuring safety on Lagos’ inland waterways."

The authorities also reiterated the need for strict adherence to safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and compliance with the night travel rule on Lagos waterways.

They urged residents to remain calm and rely only on verified information from LASWA, NIWA, and other official sources as rescue and investigative efforts continue.
