Court Adjourns Trial Of Anthony Joshua's Driver To January 20 After Police Arraignment

Chief Magistrate Somefun granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties. 

 

The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the accident that injured British heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State.

The defendant, 45-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was on Friday docked before Chief Magistrate O.M. Somefun of the Sagamu Magisterial Division on a four-count charge.

In a statement issued by the Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the police said the charges stemmed from an accident involving the Lexus SUV, which resulted in the death of two foreign nationals who were Joshua’s friends.

According to the statement, Kayode was accused of driving in a manner dangerous to members of the public, an offence said to be punishable under Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2002, as applicable in Ogun State.

The police further alleged that the defendant engaged in reckless driving, negligence, and driving at a speed without due care and reasonable consideration for other road users, actions which reportedly caused injuries to Anthony Joshua.

He was also accused of driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, as applicable in Ogun State.

Chief Magistrate Somefun granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties. 

The defendant was subsequently remanded pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

The case was adjourned to January 20, 2026, for trial.

Joshua was hospitalised after the accident which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident, which happened at about 11am in Makun, near the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound axis, claimed the lives of two passengers, while the boxer sustained minor injuries.
