The Kano State chapter of the APC has confirmed that Governor Yusuf is expected to officially join the party within a few days, signalling a major shift in the state’s political landscape.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved its entire leadership structure in Kano State, including state, local government, and ward executives, ahead of Governor Abba Yusuf’s reported defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, saying a caretaker committee would be established soon to manage the party’s affairs in the state.

The move follows a long-standing political rift between the NNPP National Leader and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Yusuf, who is reportedly set to join the APC in the coming days, a decision strongly opposed by Kwankwaso.

“The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, after an emergency meeting, has, in accordance with the constitution of the party, announced the dissolution of its Executive Committees at the State, Local Government, and Ward levels in Kano State,” Johnson said.

He added, “In line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, the NWC resolved to appoint Caretaker Committees to act in the interim. Further instructions will be announced in due course.”

Johnson also expressed gratitude to outgoing leaders for their service, saying, “The NWC accordingly thanked all those who held positions at the State, Local Government, and Ward structures of the party in Kano State and assured them of the party’s appreciation for their invaluable contributions.”

The Kano State chapter of the APC has confirmed that Governor Yusuf is expected to officially join the party within a few days, signalling a major shift in the state’s political landscape.

The NNPP’s dissolution of its leadership structures is seen as a pre-emptive measure to manage the anticipated transition and maintain party operations amid growing uncertainty.

The caretaker committees are expected to stabilise the party at all levels until new leadership is appointed in accordance with party guidelines.

Political observers say the governor’s defection could significantly alter the balance of power in Kano ahead of upcoming elections.

The NNPP has not yet announced the members of the caretaker committees but assured stakeholders that further instructions would be communicated soon.
