Terrorists, locally dubbed as bandits on Friday attacked commuters along the Danjibga–Kuncin Kalgo road in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, burning two vehicles and abducting all passengers on board.
SaharaReporters gathered that the assailants blocked the road before unleashing the attack.
The bandits reportedly set two vehicles ablaze after seizing their occupants, whose whereabouts remain unknown as of Saturday.
A security alert platform, Bakatsine, confirmed the incident on Saturday, noting that the attack once again highlights the persistent insecurity on major roads across Zamfara State.
SaharaReporters previously reported that days after a deadly Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion that claimed at least eight lives, Nigerian security forces cleared the Gusau–Magami–Dansadau Road in Zamfara State and declared the highway safe for public use.
SaharaReporters learnt that the clearance followed an emergency joint operation launched after the December 27 IED blast along the Magami–Dansadau axis, which also led to the destruction of property and sparked widespread panic among residents and travellers.
Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba, specialised Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams were immediately deployed to comb the highway amid fears that more explosives may have been planted along the strategic route.
The operation brought together Police EOD units, Military EOD operatives, and the Joint Task Force under Operation Fansa-Yamma.
The sweep was conducted with armed security providing cover throughout the exercise.
