A passengers boat heading to Abonnema in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State has capsized, triggering panic among commuters on board.

The incident, which occurred on a busy waterway in the state, was said to have thrown passengers into fear as the boat suddenly overturned mid-journey.

Witnesses claimed that no life was lost, as nearby boat operators quickly intervened and rescued all occupants.

They noted that the swift response of fellow river transport operators prevented what could have degenerated into a fatal accident.

“People were shouting and panicking when the boat capsized, but other boat drivers around immediately moved in to help,” an eyewitness said.

“Everyone was rescued before things got out of hand.”

In October, SaharaReporters reported a tragic boat mishap on the River Niger left scores feared dead, with many victims reportedly lying lifeless beneath the waters, and several others missing.

The incident had occurred in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The Chairman of Ibaji Local Government Area, Hon. Ugeh Emmanuel, had described the disaster as the most devastating in the council’s history. Speaking in a telephone conversation with journalists, he had said the true scale of casualties remained uncertain.
