The United Kingdom’s Metropolitan Police have charged a 17-year-old boy with murder following the fatal stabbing of a Nigerian national, John Onetufo, in the Lewisham area of London on New Year’s Eve.

Onetufo, 23, was found with multiple stab wounds to his chest after police responded to a distress call in Grove Street, Lewisham, on Wednesday, December 31. Despite efforts by paramedics to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement published on the UK police website and obtained on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the teenage suspect was formally charged with murder on Monday, January 5.

Due to his age, the suspect cannot be named. He is scheduled to appear before the Bromley Magistrates’ Youth Court.

Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who is leading the investigation, said the arrests marked “a significant development” but stressed that inquiries were still ongoing.

“My team has worked relentlessly over recent days to pursue every line of enquiry, and I can confirm that two arrests have now been made in connection with this tragic incident,” Townsend said earlier.

“This is a significant development, but our investigation remains ongoing as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.

“I want to extend my deepest sympathies to John’s family and friends. We remain committed to finding answers and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.”

Police also disclosed that two other suspects arrested in connection with the case have been granted bail.

“A 23-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 2 January, on suspicion of murder. He has since been bailed while enquiries continue,” the statement said.

“An 18-year-old woman was also arrested on Sunday, 4 January, on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. She has been bailed while enquiries continue.”

The killing of Onetufo has sparked renewed concern among Nigerians in the UK over violent crime, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death.
