The Nigeria Democratic Front (NDF) has strongly condemned the impeachment proceedings initiated by some lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing the move as politically motivated and a threat to democratic stability in the state.

In a statement on Saturday signed by its National Coordinator, Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, the NDF accused the lawmakers behind the impeachment attempt of acting in the personal interest of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, rather than that of their constituents.

The group alleged that the impeachment move was a “shameful display of political thuggery” and called on political stakeholders in Rivers State and within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to initiate a recall process against the lawmakers involved.

“Their action clearly shows that they no longer represent the interests of their constituents but those of their political paymaster,” the statement said.

The NDF further accused Wike of deliberately seeking to plunge Rivers State into prolonged political instability for personal gain, urging residents of the state to reject the lawmakers and resist what it described as politics of godfatherism and greed.

“The people of Rivers State should reject the lawmakers loudly and sternly. They do not mean well for the state or its people,” Ellis-Ezenekwe stated.

“Rivers people are tired of bloodsuckers and the politics of godfathers.”

The group expressed support for Governor Fubara, urging him to remain resolute in the face of political pressure.

“Rivers State is ready for people-oriented development, not Wike-oriented destruction,” the NDF said, adding that the governor enjoys the backing of the people and should not be intimidated.

The NDF also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene by calling the FCT minister to order, warning that failure to do so could further deepen political tensions in the oil-rich state.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Rivers State House of Assembly nor the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had responded to the allegations.
