The provision for vehicle purchases appears alongside other high-value administrative and infrastructure-related projects captured in the university’s 2026 budget estimates.

A SaharaReporters review of Nigeria’s 2026 budget has shown that Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, earmarked N252 million for the purchase of three luxury vehicles for top officials.

According to details contained in the budget documents reviewed by SaharaReporters, the vehicles are intended for the university’s Pro-Chancellor and two principal officers. This allocation suggests that an average of N84 million will be spent on each vehicle by the school.

The provision for vehicle purchases appears alongside other high-value administrative and infrastructure-related projects captured in the university’s 2026 budget estimates.

Further examination of the documents shows that N96 million has been allocated for the completion and furnishing of the Chancellor’s lodge. In addition, another N21 million is set aside for the completion and furnishing of the Pro-Chancellor’s lodge.

Beyond residential projects, the budget also makes provision for perimeter fencing of the university, which is projected to cost N105 million in the 2026 fiscal year. The fencing project is listed as part of the institution’s capital expenditure for the year.

The budget review further shows that the university plans to undertake several road construction projects, some of which extend beyond its immediate academic environment.

Notably, N350 million is earmarked for the construction of the 7.5-kilometre Oloko–Amizi Road (Section II) located in Abia Central. This project is captured as part of the university’s capital development plans for 2026.

Another N210 million is allocated for the construction of the Nkukunmiri Ala Ala–Okeuzo Oloko Road in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State. In addition, N140 million is planned for the construction of the 4.5-kilometre Ogbuebulle Oloko Road, also in Abia State. A further N140 million is budgeted for the construction of the 1.1-kilometre Amuzu Road within the state.

These road projects, which collectively run into hundreds of millions of naira, are listed alongside the institution’s core administrative and capital expenditure items, highlighting the scope of spending planned by the university in the 2026 budget year.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), expended a total of N773 million on honoraria and other stipends during the 2024 financial year, according to a review of the institution’s financial statement for the year ended December 31, 2024.

The same financial statement revealed that an additional N240 million was spent on refreshments and meals within the period, bringing total expenditure on honoraria, stipends, and refreshments to N1.013 billion in 2024.

Despite its core mandate as an academic institution focused on teaching and research, UNN spent only N83 million on direct teaching and laboratory costs during the same year, a figure that was significantly lower than spending on non-academic items.
