In a statement posted to his Truth social media account, Trump said that any country engaging in business with the Islamic Republic of Iran would face a 25 percent tariff on “any and all business being done with the United States of America.”

President Donald Trump on Monday evening announced what he described as an immediate trade penalty targeting countries that conduct business with Iran, signalling a potential escalation in US economic pressure against Tehran.

In a statement posted to his Truth social media account, Trump said that any country engaging in business with the Islamic Republic of Iran would face a 25 percent tariff on “any and all business being done with the United States of America.”

“Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote. “This Order is final and conclusive.”

The statement, which received tens of thousands of interactions online, did not provide details on how such a tariff would be implemented, which countries would be affected, or what legal authority would be used to enforce the measure.

Trump, who has made economic pressure on Iran a central element of his foreign policy platform, withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear agreement in 2018 while in office and imposed sweeping sanctions on Tehran.

The proposed tariff would represent a broader approach, potentially affecting U.S. trade relations with allies and major global economies that maintain commercial ties with Iran.

Trade experts note that imposing blanket tariffs on third-party countries could face significant legal and diplomatic challenges, particularly under World Trade Organization rules and existing trade agreements.

The White House and the U.S. Treasury Department did not immediately comment on the statement. It remains unclear whether the announcement reflects an official policy proposal or a campaign position.

Iranian officials have not publicly responded to the remarks.
