The incident, according to the police, occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, at Oretan Ijaiye area of Moniya in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old hunter, Waheed Rasaki, for allegedly shooting his co-hunter, Femi Oyedepo, to death during a hunting expedition in Ibadan, the state capital.
The incident, according to the police, occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, at Oretan Ijaiye area of Moniya in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said Rasaki reported himself to the Moniya Police Division after the incident, claiming the shooting was accidental.
“On January 7, 2026, at about 21:20 hours, Waheed Rasaki, male, 35 years, of Oretan Ijaiye Area, Moniya, reported to Moniya Division that earlier on the same date, at about 14:00 hours, he had mistakenly shot his colleague, Femi Oyedepo, male, during a hunting expedition at Oretan Ijaiye Forest,” the statement read.
SP Ayanlade added that the victim slumped and died on the spot after being shot.
“Police operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, promptly visited the scene, discovered the lifeless body, and arrested the suspect, who is currently in police custody. Further investigations have commenced,” he said.
The police spokesperson noted that the case highlights the command’s response to both criminal and accidental deaths, stressing that accountability would be ensured.
In a related development, the Oyo State Police Command also confirmed the arrest of one Olatunji Segun in connection with the killing of a student of Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic, Saki.
According to the police, the command responded to a distress call on January 7 at about 14:30 hours, reporting a violent altercation among students of the polytechnic at Challenge 1 area, behind the institution.
“During the altercation, one student sustained a gunshot wound to the back and was rushed to Tunmise Private Hospital, Saki, where the victim later succumbed to the injury,” the statement said.
Police operatives recovered one expended cartridge from the scene, while Segun was arrested in connection with the incident. Investigations, the police said, are ongoing to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the killing.
The Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, commended officers involved in the operations for their swift response and professionalism, assuring residents that the command remains committed to maintaining law and order across the state.
The police further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station to aid in the protection of lives and property.
