According to the Command, the identification followed “widespread public concern and reports of assaults and intimidation of residents in the occasion.”

The Anambra State Police Command has identified the individual behind the violent conduct displayed during a recent masquerade outing in Awgbu community, following public outcry over reported assaults and intimidation of residents.

The statement announcing this was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, and dated Saturday.

In the statement the police disclosed that the suspect is a 28-year-old male, Ifesinachi Ezeolu.

According to the Command, the identification followed “widespread public concern and reports of assaults and intimidation of residents in the occasion.”

While addressing the incident, the police reaffirmed their recognition of cultural and traditional practices across the state but stressed that such practices must not infringe on the rights of citizens.

The statement read, "The Command wishes to clearly state that the Nigeria Police Force respects and recognises the cultural and traditional practices of the people. However, no cultural activity or belief system should be used as a cover to harass, assault, intimidate, or violate the fundamental human rights of citizens."

The Command further warned that masquerade activities, like other public events, are subject to the law and must be conducted peacefully.

Emphasising its stance on public safety, the police said, "The Command also emphasises that masquerade activities, like all public gatherings, must be conducted peacefully and within the confines of the law. Therefore, any act capable of causing fear, injury, or public disorder will be promptly addressed."

The police added that investigations into the Awgbu incident are ongoing, noting that efforts are being intensified to identify other individuals who may have participated in or supported the violent acts.

According to the statement, "Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to identify and bring to justice other suspects who are linked to the incident."

Reassuring residents of the Command’s commitment to safety and order, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Ikioye Orutugu pledged continued engagement with community stakeholders.

The statement noted that the Commissioner "reassures residents that the Command will continue to work with traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to promote peaceful cultural expressions, while ensuring the safety and rights of all individuals."

Previously, SaharaReporters reported that the Anambra State Police Command arrested a masquerader responsible for a violent, unprovoked attack on residents of Awgbu in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state, a development the police said disrupted public peace in the community.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspect who assaulted citizens is now in custody as the command intensifies investigations.

The arrest of the masquerader in Anambra comes amid similar concerns in neighbouring Akwa Ibom State, where masquerade-related violence and public disturbances have prompted sustained police action and government intervention.
