Bayelsa Police Command Detains Two Officers For Brutal Assault Of Tricycle Rider

The Bayelsa State Police Command said it has arrested two officers in connection with a viral video showing them assaulting a tricycle rider.

The situation escalated into violence after the officers seized one of the tricycle tyres.

The tricycle operator was seen trying to retrieve the tyre, after which the officers allegedly pushed him to the ground and struck him repeatedly. 

Following public attention on the video, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, condemned the conduct and ordered the officers involved to be arrested.

“The officers involved have been arrested and disciplinary proceedings have since commenced in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and other extant regulations.”

The police command emphasised that the act is not in line with policing standards.

“The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, has condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as unacceptable and contrary to professional policing standards.”

The command also stressed that such behaviour is not tolerated.

“He reiterates that the Command does not tolerate any form of human rights violation, unprofessional conduct or brutality.”

The police also highlighted their commitment to citizens’ rights and safety.

“CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor reiterates the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of the rights and safety of all citizens while ensuring lawful and professional policing across Bayelsa State.”

The statement confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that the outcome will be released to the public.

“The attention of this unit has been drawn to this viral video, the investigation is ongoing and the outcome of the investigation will be made public.”
