SaharaReporters learnt that Olawoye was released on Tuesday.

Pastor Kayode Olawoye, the detained cleric and civic advocate who recently became vocal in a public campaign demanding improved road infrastructure across Ogun State, has been released.

SaharaReporters learnt that Olawoye was released on Tuesday.

“Pastor Kayode Olawoye has been released,” a source close to the cleric told SaharaReporters.

Earlier on Tuesday, SaharaReporters reported that the Department of State Services (DSS) had detained Pastor Olawoye.

SaharaReporters gathered that Pastor Olawoye was invited on Monday to the DSS office in Abeokuta to have a chat, marking the third invitation extended to him by the secret police.

However, unlike previous encounters, the cleric was not allowed to leave the DSS facility and was subsequently detained.

The circumstances surrounding his detention raised serious concerns among residents, who described the action as part of a widening pattern of intimidation against citizens calling attention to governance failures under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration.

Pastor Olawoye, known for his community outreach and advocacy, had in recent weeks intensified his campaign for safer and motorable roads, highlighting the deteriorating condition of key routes across the state and the hardship faced daily by commuters, traders, and residents.

His calls, delivered through sermons, community engagements, and media interventions, reportedly drew the ire of authorities.

Residents have accused Governor Abiodun of presiding over an administration that is increasingly hostile to dissent and accountability.

According to multiple accounts, individuals who publicly draw attention to governance lapses, particularly at the local government level, have faced harassment, arrests, or threats.

Last year, Governor Abiodun was accused of directing councillors to impeach a local government chairman in Ogun State for insisting on the release of statutory allocations meant for his local council.

The chairman, Wale Adedayo of Ijebu East Local Government, had reportedly demanded that funds due to his council be released to enable basic governance and development.

The impeachment was later challenged in court. In a judgment delivered in December 2025, the court nullified Adedayo’s removal, declaring the impeachment illegal, unconstitutional, and politically motivated.

The court reinstated him as chairman of Ijebu East Local Government and awarded N30 million in damages against those responsible for the unlawful action.

SaharaReporters previously reported that the Ogun State Police Command filed a six-count criminal charge against a popular blogger, Adetoun Onajobi, widely known across multiple social media platforms by her handle, @justadetoun, over allegations bordering on cybercrime, false information, and obstruction of justice.

The charges are now pending before the Federal High Court, Abeokuta Division, and are predicated on allegations that the blogger used various internet-enabled platforms to publish false accusations against the Ogun State government and to allegedly engaged in sustained online bullying of Governor Abiodun.

The police described her alleged actions as a violation of relevant provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the suspect, Adetoun Onajobi (female), has in recent times come under police investigation following complaints arising from her online activities.

The police disclosed that on January 2, 2026, the Ogun State Police Command formally invited Onajobi for an interview.

The invitation, the Command said, was intended to afford her the opportunity to respond to allegations connected to her alleged online conduct, particularly claims of cyberbullying directed at the Governor of Ogun State.

However, rather than honour the invitation, the suspect, through her legal counsel, reportedly wrote to the police claiming that she was medically indisposed and therefore unable to attend the scheduled meeting.
