Some lawless operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have been accused of assaulting a young man and unlawfully driving away with his vehicle in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the victim was seen being physically assaulted by police officers after he was stopped while driving his car.
The disturbing footage shows at least three officers involved in the incident: two of them held the young man by his hands, restraining him, while another officer entered his vehicle and drove off.
Despite the man’s visible resistance and attempts to follow his car, he was forcefully blocked by the officers, preventing him from running after the vehicle as it was being driven away.
The officers were also accused of acting without any form of professionalism or regard for the rights of the citizen.
Reacting to the viral video, the Delta State Police Command acknowledged the incident and condemned the conduct of the officers involved.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, described the actions of the officers captured in the video as unprofessional.
According to him, the command has already begun steps to address the situation.
“This is unprofessional. I have gone to their base; the vehicle is not there. However, the command is looking into it, and proper actions will be taken,” Edafe stated.
As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear whether the officers involved have been identified or suspended, or whether the victim’s vehicle has been recovered.
SaharaReporters previously reported that two police officers attached to the Bayelsa State Police Command have been caught on camera assaulting and brutalising a tricyclist after demanding his driver’s licence.
In a disturbing video obtained by SaharaReporters, the two uniformed officers were seen physically assaulting the tricycle operator, pushing him violently to the ground and repeatedly hitting him with their rifles during a roadside encounter in Bayelsa State.
As seen in the footage, the officers stopped the tricycle operator and demanded his driver’s licence.
Moments later, the situation escalated into violence as the officers seized one of the tyres of the tricycle.
When the victim attempted to retrieve his tyre, the officers descended on him, shoving him to the ground and beating him mercilessly.
In the video, one of the officers was seen striking the helpless man with his shoe, while both officers continued to hit him repeatedly with the butt of their rifles.
The victim could be heard crying out in pain and pleading for mercy as he lay overpowered and defenceless on the ground.
Despite his pleas, the officers showed no restraint. The tricycle operator was heard explaining that he was sick and helpless, insisting that his documents were complete and valid.
However, his explanations fell on deaf ears as the officers continued the assault.
The officers eventually took away the tricycle tyre and left the operator badly injured, with visible wounds all over his body. The victim was left stranded and in severe pain after the officers walked away from the scene.
