Nigerian Man Loses Eye After Police Fire Teargas At Close Range In Abuja, Another Shot In Katsina
January 20, 2026

An eyewitness, Aliyu Abdullahi, said the incident occurred while he and others were at their place of business.

A young man, Abraham Immanuel, has lost his left eye following what eyewitnesses described as a night raid by Nigerian police officers attached to the Bwari Police Division in Abuja.

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the victim was seen with an injured left eye while a voice in the background identified him, saying, “This is Mr. Abraham Immanuel, the victim of this night raid where the DPO Bwari Police Division, shot a teargas directly at his eye.

“Today is 8 January 2026. The young man in question has lost one eye. This is really barbaric. This is inhumane. I’m really in pain.”

The speaker further asked the victim about his treatment, during which it was stated that the operation was carried out at “General Hospital, Asokoro.”

Another eyewitness, Emmanuel, in an audio recording obtained by SaharaReporters, narrated how the incident allegedly occurred during a police operation in Sabon Gari.

“My name is Emmanuel,” he said, adding, “I’m speaking from Sabon Gari. I was working in one church, a Redeemed Church.”

According to him, security personnel were invited following the burning of a tyre in the area.

“So they called me that we should come and stay around Sabon Gari… so that we could stop the burning of a tyre,” he explained.

He alleged that police officers passed through the area multiple times before firing teargas.

“For them to come back for the third time. That’s when I begin to hear the gas enter my nose,” he said.

Emmanuel further alleged that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was present at the scene.

“The next thing I saw, they were holding somebody. The DPO stood there… He came down, one leg outside, one leg inside. He opened the armoured vehicle. He shot the gas to the chief’s palace side,” he stated.

Emmanuel said that shortly after, he saw his colleague assisting the injured victim.

“It was when he approached us, I saw this guy with blood. He was falling,” he said, adding, “I saw him. He (The DPO) shot one here. He came down, he shot three at this axis, like this.”

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters also obtained an interview detailing a similar incident in Katsina State, where another victim, identified as Tasiru, was shot by police officers on January 1.

An eyewitness, Aliyu Abdullahi, said the incident occurred while he and others were at their place of business.

“We saw people running towards us from G5,” he said.

Aliyu stated that police officers were chasing a young man who later collapsed near him.

“The boy managed to reach where I was and he was crying oh my God, oh my God,” he recalled, adding that the victim told him it was the police who shot him.

He alleged that the bullet struck the victim near the neck.

“They shot him towards his neck, but the bullet didn’t penetrate his neck,” Aliyu said.

According to him, the victim was rushed to hospital and later taken home due to the high cost of treatment.

“We paid N45,500 for his operations,” he said, noting that doctors requested further tests including a CT scan.

Aliyu also accused the police of failing to properly investigate the incident.

“They didn’t even open file to properly file the case,” he said.

He further alleged that when officers visited the hospital, “he said this is not a bullet wound but a wound from iron and accident-related incident,” despite insisting that “there is no any sharp objects or iron in that location.”

Lamenting what he described as repeated abuse, Aliyu said, “This is not the first time; there are many seminar incidents of such involving police. We need justice.”
