The corps members were reportedly relocated from the Yipkata Permanent Orientation Camp following rising insecurity in Kwara North.

Nigerian police officers on Tuesday fired tear gas to disperse students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, who were protesting against the relocation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp to their campus.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred after students blocked the main gate of the institution to prevent newly deployed corps members from entering the campus.

The corps members were reportedly relocated from the Yipkata Permanent Orientation Camp following rising insecurity in Kwara North.

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, students were seen scampering for safety as a police van drove into the campus. Police officers were also captured throwing tear gas canisters at students who were protesting peacefully within the school premises, forcing many of them to flee.

SaharaReporters learnt that the protest began early in the day when students converged at the school gate, chanting slogans and demanding that the NYSC authorities and the Kwara State Government reverse the decision to use the polytechnic as a temporary orientation camp.

According to the students, the decision has caused serious disruption to academic activities and student welfare.

Students also expressed fears over safety, overcrowding, insisting that the institution is not equipped to serve as an NYSC orientation camp while academic activities are ongoing.

Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, police officers were reportedly invited to the scene, leading to the violent dispersal of the students.
