In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, MonITNG said what should serve as a place of care and healing for over 2000 residents has been reduced to a crumbling structure marked by cracked walls, broken windows, leaking roofs and damp, debris-filled floors.

A civic monitoring group, MonITNG, has raised the alarm over the deplorable state of the Umunneato Ishi-Ogwa Primary Health Centre in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, describing the facility as unsafe, abandoned and unfit for human use.

In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, MonITNG said what should serve as a place of care and healing for over 2000 residents has been reduced to a crumbling structure marked by cracked walls, broken windows, leaking roofs and damp, debris-filled floors.

According to the group, the entire health centre premises has been overtaken by weeds, turning it into a breeding ground for snakes and other reptiles that now roam freely within and around the facility.

Rooms originally designated for patient care were found overgrown, exposed to harsh weather conditions and completely unsuitable for medical services.

The centre reportedly has no electricity, no medical equipment, no functional wards and no healthcare personnel on ground.

MonITNG said the discovery was made by the Tracka team during its nationwide monitoring of Primary Healthcare Centres under the Federal Government’s ongoing PHC revitalisation programme.

“The story from Imo State remains deeply disturbing,” the group said, noting that despite billions of naira allocated annually to the health sector, primary healthcare facilities across the state have been left to rot.

The organisation called on Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA); and the Federal Ministry of Health to urgently intervene.

“Leadership must prioritise people over politics,” MonITNG said, urging authorities to immediately clear the premises, reconstruct the facility, equip it adequately and deploy qualified medical personnel.

The group stressed that primary healthcare remains the first line of defence for citizens and warned that communities deserve safe, functional health centres close to their homes.
