Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, Sector 3 of Operation WHIRL STROKE, have arrested suspected gunrunners in Taraba State and recovering weapons in a series of intelligence-led operations.
Confirming the development on Thursday, the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Brigade, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, said the operation was intelligence-driven and aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal spread of arms.
“Troops of 6 Brigade, Sector 3, Operation WHIRL STROKE, in conjunction with operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency, recorded a significant success against arms trafficking following sustained surveillance and deliberate operational planning,” Muhammad said.
He disclosed that two suspected gun runners, Christopher Adamu and James Yangyang, were arrested on January 11 and 12, 2026, at Sebos Joint in Mayo Dassa, Jalingo Local Government Area, and Tautre Village in Ardo-Kola LGA respectively.
“The arrests were achieved through intelligence-led operations targeted at dismantling criminal elements involved in the illegal proliferation of small arms within our Area of Responsibility,” he added.
According to Muhammad, follow-up operations led troops to Murubai Village in Ardo-Kola LGA, where a cordon and search operation resulted in the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and four rounds of live ammunition from the residence of a suspected arms trafficker, Bazoe John, who is currently at large.
“Although the suspect fled, troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine and four rounds of live ammunition from his residence. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend him and recover additional weapons,” he said.
Muhammad noted that the operation was conducted without casualties and with strict adherence to professionalism and respect for civil authority.
“The operation was concluded successfully without incident, reflecting the high level of discipline, professionalism and operational competence of our troops,” he stated.
He added that the Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, has commended the troops for their courage and dedication, assuring them of continued support while urging members of the public to assist security agencies with credible intelligence.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring lasting peace and stability in Taraba State. Members of the public are encouraged to continue to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing security efforts,” Muhammad said.
