The assailants reportedly opened fire on residents, leaving an unspecified number of others injured, as the community was thrown into mourning and grief after the incident, according to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, on Friday.

Six persons have been confirmed dead following an attack by bandits on residents of Baidi community in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The assailants reportedly opened fire on residents, leaving an unspecified number of others injured, as the community was thrown into mourning and grief after the incident, according to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, on Friday.

The attack reportedly occurred on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, with families left to grapple with the aftermath of the violence that claimed several lives.

A video shared by Makama on Thursday shows residents carrying the bodies of their loved ones to the cemetery for burial according to Islamic rites.

Attempts by SaharaReporters to obtain comments from the police were unsuccessful, as messages and calls to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Command, Ahmad Rufai, went unanswered at the time of this report.

The latest attack adds to a string of security incidents in Sokoto State and surrounding areas, including repeated bandit raids on rural communities, as recently reported by SaharaReporters.

Residents in parts of Tangaza and neighbouring local government areas have fled their homes amid ongoing threats from armed groups.

Farmers have reportedly abandoned farmlands, exacerbating food insecurity and economic hardship in affected communities.

Despite repeated assurances from security agencies, residents continue to express concern over the frequency of attacks and the slow response to distress calls in remote areas.
