Reports indicate that one of the tyres came off while the vehicle was in motion, causing a moment of panic among players and officials on board.

The Bayelsa United’s team bus has been involved in a major incident on the Abuja road while en route to Kano State for their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 22 fixture against Barau FC.

Reports indicate that one of the tyres came off while the vehicle was in motion, causing a moment of panic among players and officials on board.

Witnesses said the driver was able to regain control, and no lives were lost in the incident.

All members of the Bayelsa United contingent are reported to be safe, with no serious injuries recorded.

Meanwhile, officials have yet to state alternative plans on the team’s travel and the impact on their match preparations.

SaharaReporters reported in June 2025 that 22 people died in Kano State team bus involved in a road accident while returning from a sports festival in the south-west of the country.

Athletes, coaches, officials, medical staff and a journalist were among the fatalities when the state bus carrying the team veered off the road and overturned around the town of Dakatsalle, approximately 40km from Kano.

A further nine people were injured in the accident, while one person travelling on the bus did not sustain an injury.

The contingent was making a journey of over 1,000km back from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, which had concluded.

Shehu Dikko, the chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), said the accident marked "a very sad day for Nigerian sports".

"We are heartbroken by this tragedy," Dikko added in a statement.
