The United States President, Donald Trump, has dismissed suggestions that China could dominate or “take over” Canada, insisting such a scenario is impossible.

In a brief but emphatic statement posted on White House official account on X, Trump said, “The last thing the World needs is to have China take over Canada. It’s NOT going to happen, or even come close to happening! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

The comment, which has sparked reactions across diplomatic and political circles, comes amid ongoing global debates about China’s expanding economic and strategic influence, particularly in North America and other Western-aligned regions.

China has in recent years deepened economic ties with Canada through trade, technology partnerships, and infrastructure-linked investments, developments that have occasionally drawn scrutiny from Washington.

Trump had threatened a 100% tariff on Canadian imports if Canada proceeds with a deal with China, criticising Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for prioritising ties with China over US-backed security initiatives.

China is Canada's second-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $100 billion in 2023.

Canada exports crude oil, gold, and rapeseed to China, while importing computers, broadcasting equipment, and cars.

Trump's tariffs aim to protect US industries and renegotiate trade terms while Canada and China have deepened economic ties, raising concerns in Washington.

The situation reflects broader global debates on China's economic influence and US trade policies.
