The fire, which was reported at about 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, occurred at a chemical warehouse factory located beside SAPID.

According to NEMA, the blaze originated within a warehouse storing various chemical substances and quickly spread to nearby buildings.

“The incident, which originated within a warehouse storing various chemical substances, spread rapidly to adjoining buildings housing bathroom fittings and doors,” NEMA said in a statement issued on Sunday.

“Upon receiving the distress alert, NEMA LTO immediately deployed response personnel to the scene, working in close collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) and other relevant emergency stakeholders to contain the situation.”

Preliminary findings suggest that the fire was caused by a suspected container explosion within the chemical storage facility, which intensified the blaze and aided its rapid spread.

“Preliminary assessments indicate that the fire was triggered by a suspected container explosion within the chemical storage facility,” NEMA said.

“The explosion resulted in the swift spread of flames to the roof of a nearby warehouse, with highly flammable materials further escalating the intensity of the fire.”

According to the agency, emergency responders were able to bring the situation under control, preventing further damage to surrounding structures. However, NEMA said teams remained at the scene to ensure total extinguishment.

While the suspected container explosion has been identified as the immediate cause of the incident, NEMA noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
