In a statement on Sunday, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, said the male driver, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was allegedly driving a Honda SUV (registration number FKJ 562 JF) at a dangerously high speed while descending the bridge when he collided with the rear of a Scania truck.

A suspected drunk driver was critically injured early Sunday after crashing into a moving truck at Ebute-Ero, near NEPA in Apongbon, Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.

The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the driver trapped inside the mangled wreckage of his vehicle and sparking fears of a fatal outcome, according to preliminary reports.

LASTMA officials said their rescue team swiftly mobilised to the scene, carried out an emergency extraction of the trapped driver and handed him over to security operatives. He was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

To prevent further accidents, LASTMA officers cordoned off the scene and managed traffic along the busy corridor, while personnel from the Ebute-Ero Police Division provided security cover throughout the rescue and recovery operation.

Both the Honda SUV and the Scania truck were later evacuated from the road and handed over to security agencies for investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, described the crash as “entirely avoidable” and blamed it on reckless driving, particularly driving under the influence of alcohol.

While wishing the injured driver a speedy recovery, Giwa condemned drunk driving, warning that it remains one of the deadliest forms of traffic indiscipline on Lagos roads.

He described drinking and driving as one of the most lethal forms of road indiscipline, stressing that such “irresponsible behaviour not only imperils the life of the driver but also exposes innocent road users to needless danger and potential loss of life”.

LASTMA reiterated its warning to motorists to obey traffic regulations and abstain completely from alcohol before driving, stressing that drunk driving continues to claim lives on Lagos roads.
