An eyewitness, Johnson, said the victim had arrived early for work and was crossing the road after buying food when the bus struck her.

A female Point of Sale (POS) operator was killed on Monday morning after a commercial coaster bus rammed into her near the Total filling station in the Berger area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, eyewitnesses have said.

Multiple witnesses told SaharaReporters that the coaster bus was being chased at high speed by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) when the fatal incident occurred.

An eyewitness, Johnson, said the victim had arrived early for work and was crossing the road after buying food when the bus struck her.

According to him, neither the driver of the coaster bus nor the FRSC officials involved in the chase stopped after hitting the woman.

“The woman who was killed is a POS operator around here. She came very early, bought food and was trying to cross the road near the Total filling station when FRSC officials were chasing a commercial coaster bus at high speed,” Johnson said.

“In the process, the coaster bus hit her and flung her to the other side of the road. The driver did not stop. The FRSC vehicle also did not stop. They continued the chase.”

Johnson said the woman was left on the road for several minutes with severe injuries and had died before police officers from the Utako Division arrived at the scene.

He added that a bystander recorded the incident on video and later accompanied the police.

Reacting to the incident, the FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Felix Theman, said the Corps had commenced an investigation and recalled patrol teams operating in the area.

“I received a report similar to yours and we are investigating. I have recalled all patrol teams within the central area, Zone 7 and surrounding locations to determine whether any of our patrol vehicles were involved,” Theman said.

He cautioned against drawing conclusions, claiming that motorists sometimes mistakenly assume they are being chased by FRSC officials.

“Until we establish the facts, it would be premature to say a patrol team was involved,” he added.
