Suspected bandits on Monday night invaded Tiga town in the Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, killing a prominent community businessman, Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago.

They also carted away valuables in a deadly attack that has further heightened fears over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria’s northwest.

The assailants reportedly stormed the community under the cover of darkness and shot Alhaji Habibu inside his shop before looting goods and fleeing the area.

The incident was disclosed in a statement shared on X on Tuesday morning by security commentator DanKatsina50, who described the killing as another grim reminder of the persistent threat posed by banditry in the region.

“Last night, gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded Tiga town in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State. During the attack, they killed a well-known community businessman, Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago, in his shop and carted away valuables before fleeing the area,” the statement read.

Residents of Tiga town were said to have been thrown into panic, with many expressing concern over what they described as increasing vulnerability of rural and semi-urban communities to violent attacks.

The killing has reignited public debate about the sustained escalation of banditry and violent crime across parts of the northwest, as well as the effectiveness of current security measures.

“How long will the continued escalation of banditry in Nigeria’s northwest persist, and what concrete steps are being taken to protect lives and livelihoods?” the statement queried.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from the Kano State Police Command regarding the attack. However, residents are calling for immediate deployment of security personnel to the area and intensified patrols to forestall further incidents.

Community leaders in Bebeji Local Government Area described the late Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago as a peaceful and hardworking businessman whose death is a major loss to the town.

The latest attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents attributed to bandits and other criminal elements across northern Nigeria, where armed groups have been responsible for killings, kidnappings, and large-scale displacement of communities in recent years.
