The Nigeria Police Force has demoted a serving sergeant, Anemena Favour, to the rank of corporal over what authorities described as “discreditable conduct” bordering on a violation of the Force’s social media policy and disobedience to lawful orders.

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday, the officer was seen conducting a live TikTok broadcast while dressed in police uniform — an act the authorities said contravenes established regulations on officers’ use of social media.

Police sources told SaharaReporters that the disciplinary action followed a review of an orderly-room proceeding by the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

According to the sources, Sergeant Anemena, with force number 068919 and attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 25 in Asaba, Delta State, was found guilty under Paragraphs E(iii) and F of Police Regulation 370, Act 2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2020.

The regulation prohibits, among other things: making, sharing or commenting on posts that ridicule, malign, disparage or show bias or disrespect toward any race, gender, ethnicity, tribe, religion or nationality; making, sharing or commenting on sexually explicit or pornographic content; Supporting movements linked to religious extremism, secret societies or cult groups; and Making, sharing or commenting on posts that promote inappropriate or improper dressing in or out of uniform.

“The defaulter was found guilty as charged,” a source said, adding that the DFA upheld the punishment of reduction in rank from sergeant to corporal “to serve as a deterrent to others.”

The sources further disclosed that all relevant records have been directed to be updated to reflect the officer’s new rank.

The appropriate authorities were also instructed to amend the police IPPIS and nominal roll accordingly, while the Commander of SPU Base 25, Asaba, was directed to ensure Anemena’s immediate reversion to the rank of corporal.
