The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government has reportedly approved a ₦1trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State.

The massive infrastructure project aimed at transforming urban transportation in the state, is coming barely 72 hours after Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, announced his political realignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Yusuf disclosed the approval while addressing members of the Kano State contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State.

According to the governor, the decision by his administration to realign with the Federal Government was deliberate and driven by the need to unlock major development opportunities for Kano.

“The decision to realign with the Federal Government was strategic,” Yusuf said. “It was taken in the best interest of Kano people, to ensure that we secure critical projects that will change the face of our state and improve the lives of our citizens.”

He described the proposed Metropolitan Rail Service as a landmark intervention that would reposition Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

“The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano. This is a historic project that will overhaul urban transportation, reduce traffic congestion, and stimulate economic growth across the metropolitan area,” the governor said.

Governor Yusuf explained that the rail system would provide a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit option, linking key districts across the city.

“When completed, the rail service will ease movement for our people, facilitate trade, attract investors, and significantly improve the quality of life of Kano residents,” he added.

The governor assured that the state government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent implementation of the project and to guarantee that Kano people derive maximum benefits.

“We will collaborate fully with the Federal Government and all relevant agencies to ensure that this project is executed transparently and delivered according to the highest standards,” Yusuf stated.

He expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting federal initiatives through complementary policies and infrastructure development at the state level.

“I want to thank the Federal Government for this bold step. Kano State remains committed to partnering with the centre to drive development and prosperity for our people,” he said.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service is expected to be one of the largest single infrastructure investments in Kano State’s history and could significantly reshape the state’s transport architecture once implemented.
