Two pilots of the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) were killed on Thursday after a light attack aircraft crashed during a training mission in Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand.

Xinhua reports that the AT-6TH aircraft, attached to Wing 41 of the Thai Air Force, crashed at about 10:20 a.m. local time in Chom Thong District, roughly 60 kilometres southwest of Chiang Mai International Airport, according to an official statement.

RTAF spokesperson, Chakkrit Thammavichai, said the aircraft went down while the pilots were carrying out a combat search and rescue training exercise.

“The pilots were on a routine training mission when the incident occurred,” Chakkrit said, adding that no civilians were injured and no property damage was recorded around the crash site.

He noted that aviation and military authorities had commenced a full-scale investigation into the incident, stressing that the probe would be conducted with “utmost thoroughness and strict adherence to aviation safety standards” to determine the cause of the crash.

The Royal Thai Air Force expressed condolences to the families of the deceased pilots and assured them of full institutional support.

“The Air Force deeply regrets the loss of our personnel and will provide all necessary assistance to their families,” the statement added.
