Turaki-Led PDP Faction Heads To Appeal Court After Court Ruling Nullifies Ibadan Convention
January 30, 2026

Following the judgment, the party faction in a statement said it had taken steps to challenge the decision, including briefing its lawyers to pursue an appeal and other legal actions.

The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has directed its lawyers to appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, delivered on Friday, which nullified the party’s convention organised by the faction in the Oyo State capital in November 2025.

Delivering judgment on Friday, January 30, 2026, the court also ruled that the Caretaker Committee led by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the only recognised NWC of the party pending the conduct of a valid National Convention.

Following the judgment, the party faction in a statement said it had taken steps to challenge the decision, including briefing its lawyers to pursue an appeal and other legal actions.

Explaining its position on the status of the party after the ruling, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the faction stated, “We are aware of the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, delivered this morning, which essentially declined to grant the order of mandamus sought on the ground that doing so would, in the court’s view, amount to sitting on appeal over judgments of courts of coordinate jurisdiction.

“We have accordingly briefed our lawyers to immediately file an appeal and to take all further legal steps necessary to advance our arguments and firmly protect our position on this matter.

“Notwithstanding this judgment, the Kabiru Turaki–led Peoples Democratic Party, which emerged from the Ibadan Convention, remains legally intact and unshaken, as we await the authoritative pronouncement of the appellate courts.”

Addressing party members on the development, the faction said, “We therefore urge our members to remain resolute and committed as there is absolutely no cause for alarm. The REBIRTH movement remains firmly on course.”

Earlier on Friday, SaharaReporters reported that a Federal High Court in Ibadan had nullified the PDP National Convention held on November 15, 2025, in the Oyo State capital, declaring the gathering invalid.

The court barred members of the Tanimu Turaki‑led National Working Committee (NWC) from parading themselves as national officers of the PDP.

Some aggrieved stakeholders filed the suit at the Ibadan court to challenge the legality of the convention, arguing that the convention committee failed to address key issues concerning delegate lists and state congresses.

In late November 2025, a faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, and represented by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Samuel Anyanwu, also filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to nullify the Ibadan convention, arguing that it was held in “flagrant disregard” of subsisting court judgments and should be declared “null, void and of no effect.”

The Wike‑aligned faction’s suit also sought orders restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies from recognising persons elected or appointed at the Ibadan convention.
