U.S. Congressman Riley Moore has met with the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, in the United States to discuss insecurity in Nigeria’s Northern Central region and the alleged persecution of Christian communities.

Moore confirmed the meeting in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, describing the engagement as cordial and forward-looking.

“It was an honor to meet with the Governor of Plateau State in Nigeria, Caleb Mutfwang, yesterday,” the lawmaker wrote. “We had a meaningful and productive conversation about deepening the ties between our two countries.”

According to Moore, discussions during the meeting focused on security challenges facing the Plateau State and the wider Northern Nigeria, as well as broader economic and diplomatic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

“I remain committed to working with the Nigerian government in coordination and cooperation to address these security and economic challenges, especially the persecution our Christian brothers and sisters face,” he said.

The congressman also praised Governor Mutfwang for his efforts to protect vulnerable groups in the region, adding, “God bless you, Governor, for what you do to protect Christians and other vulnerable populations in the Middle Belt.”

Plateau State, located in Nigeria’s North-Central zone, has in recent years witnessed repeated terrorist attacks and clashes between farming communities and herders.

The violence has caused substantial loss of life, widespread displacement, and extensive property destruction, drawing concern both locally and internationally.

Governor Mutfwang, who assumed office in 2023, has repeatedly described insecurity in Plateau as a complex problem requiring coordinated responses from federal authorities, security agencies, community leaders and international partners.

Moore, a Republican lawmaker from West Virginia, has been vocal on issues of alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria and religious freedom.

His meeting with the Plateau governor comes amid growing scrutiny by the U.S. authorities over Nigeria’s handling of sectarian violence and protection of vulnerable populations, particularly Christian communities in the country.
