Chibuzor, a native of Amaokwe Ugba Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area, said her 22-year-old son, a cobbler and motor oil seller, was arrested on April 9, 2025, by policemen attached to the Central Police Station (CPS), Umuahia.
Justina Chibuzor, a 58-year-old widow, has appealed to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Police Service Commission to help locate her only son, Ifeanyi Chibuzor, who has been missing since his arrest in Umuahia, Abia State.
Her daughter, Adaku Chibuzor, said Ifeanyi had gone to buy items from a nearby shop but did not return home. She said repeated attempts to reach him on his mobile phone were unsuccessful
Adaku said, “Ifeanyi went to buy something from a local store and did not come back on time. We called his mobile phone several times, and he did not pick our calls.”
She added, “Around 10 pm, some policemen came to search our house with Ifeanyi in handcuff; the policemen saw a cutlass and asked the family to come to the CPS to see Ifeanyi.”
According to her, she visited her brother in police custody on April 10, but after about five days she was informed that she could no longer see him because he had been transferred to another police detention facility.
After fruitless visits to detention centres in Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, the family approached the Abia High Court in Umuahia. Adaku said the matter came up on 22nd of July, 2025, before Justice K. C. J. Okereke.
She said the suit, with no, HU/76M/2025, sought to compel the Inspector General of Police, Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, the Commissioner of Police, Abia State, and two other respondents to produce Ifeanyi Chibuzor in court.
She said Justice Okereke granted the application and ordered the respondents to produce him.
She added that when the court process did not yield the desired result, and due to paucity of fund, the family approached the Legal Aid Council in Umuahia for assistance.
Appealing for intervention, Justina Chibuzor said, “They should please help us find the whereabouts of the only son of the family”.
The family’s lawyer, Chimereze Onuigbo, said efforts to engage the Divisional Police Officer and the state Commissioner of Police were unsuccessful. He said, “After much efforts, we decided to go to court.
We filed for the enforcement of fundamental human rights. The court gave a judgement of N200 million against the respondents when they failed to appear before the court.
“There is no clear picture from arrest of Ifeanyi to his disappearance. This is about human life, even the bandits still come to court”.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the police through visits, telephone calls and text messages to the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, proved abortive.
