Women Forced To Give Birth By Torchlight As Bauchi PHC Serving 42 Communities Lies In Ruins –Report
February 5, 2026

The concerns come just days after Professor Pate, during an X Space discussion, reportedly said the Federal Government had delivered on its campaign promise in the health sector.

Concerns have been raised over the deplorable condition of a Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) in Bauchi State that is expected to serve more than 42 communities but has been left in a state of complete ruin.

“It is deeply troubling that a single Primary Health Care Centre is expected to serve over 42 communities in Bauchi State, yet even this lone facility has been left in a state of complete ruin,” civic group MonITNG said in a statement addressed to Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, and the Minister of Health, Professor Muhammad Pate.

According to MonITNG, the PHC represents the only point of access to basic healthcare for thousands of residents in the affected communities.

“For thousands of residents, this PHC represents the only point of access to basic healthcare. Today, that hope is collapsing literally,” the organisation stated.

The concerns come just days after Professor Pate, during an X Space discussion, reportedly said the Federal Government had delivered on its campaign promise in the health sector.

The minister reportedly claimed that “921 PHCs have been renovated across Nigeria.”

While the statement was described as reassuring, MonITNG insisted that realities on the ground contradict such claims.

“While such statements sound reassuring, the reality on the ground tells a very different story,” the group said, adding that “across underserved communities, thousands of PHCs remain abandoned, dysfunctional, and unsafe for both patients and healthcare workers.”

MonITNG noted that the situation has been independently confirmed by Tracka.

“This disturbing situation has been independently confirmed by the MonITNG team, and through FactsMatterNG conducted using the CheckMyPHCs platform,” the statement read.

An investigation into PHCs nationwide by Tracka reportedly led to the discovery of the abandoned facility in Bauchi State, which MonITNG described as “exposing a pattern of incomplete projects and unmet promises.”

According to the findings, in April 2025, a contractor, Kaslat Nig. Ltd, was mobilised to renovate this PHC under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.

“After constructing only a perimeter fence, the contractor abandoned the site by May 2025 and has not returned since,” MonITng said, noting that this was observed during a visit to the community by its team.

The current condition of the facility was described as dire.

“Today, the PHC remains in ruins. The roof and ceilings have collapsed, causing severe leakage whenever it rains,” the statement said.

It added that there are “no proper wards, no medical equipment, no reliable electricity,” forcing women to give birth “using torchlights.”

Residents are reportedly compelled to travel long distances to access medical care, even as Bauchi State continues to battle “recurring cholera outbreaks and other preventable diseases.”

“This is not just a failed project; it is a daily risk to human lives,” MonITNG warned.

The organisation called on the relevant authorities to intervene immediately.

“We call on your office to take immediate action, ensure the contractor is held accountable, and see to the completion and proper equipping of this health facility,” the statement said.

MonITNG concluded that communities deserve more than official claims.

“Communities deserve more than press statements and statistics. They deserve functioning healthcare centres that protect dignity, save lives, and reflect the promises made to them,” it said, stressing that “lives are being put at risk every single day this project remains abandoned.”
