A report by Aid Worker Security Database has said 461 aid workers were victims of major attacks in 2021.

According to the report, 141 aide workers were killed, 203 were wounded and 117 were kidnapped in countries.

The report said there were more lethal attacks on aid workers in 2021 than in the previous two years. The number of aid workers killed in 2021 – 141 – is the highest number of fatalities since 2013.

South Sudan was the most brutal country to aid workers with 27 cases of assault, six kidnappings, 27 shootings and five unknown cases.

Afghanistan had one case of an airstrike, one case of assault, one case of use of explosives, six kidnapping cases, one rape, 10 shootings and two unknown.

Syria came third on the list with 11 cases of airstrikes, three assaults, four explosives, three kidnappings, one shooting, and one unknown case.

Mali is the next country on the list with one assault, 16 kidnapping cases, and three explosives.

Myanmar is the fifth on the list with six assaults, one kidnap, 10 shootings, and two unknown cases.

DR Congo had one assault, seven kidnappings, and eight shootings while CAR had three assaults, two explosives, two kidnappings, five shootings, and one unknown case.

Cameroon had one assault, five kidnappings, one rape case, and three shooting cases while Nigeria had one assault case, six abduction cases and two shooting incidents against aid workers.

It was also stated that the upcoming Aid Worker Security Report will address the issue of working in hot conflict zones, where risk management is complicated by the threat of random collateral violence such as airstrikes, shelling, landmines, and UXOS.
